Two Days to Go

August 30, 2012, Day 83
Two days until departure

In the morning just sitting around thinking of things we need to do tomorrow to get ready to depart.  Lots of little things to back up that we have gotten out over these last 2 months.

Lunch was with Franz and Marcia at Chef Geoff's, good as always, and making plans to come back again next year.  We also made plans for our departure dinner tomorrow evening at Romano's on the shore of Payette Lake.

In the early evening I played in the Jug Mountain scramble with Al, Steve, sans Iugi.  We did OK, but needed to make a couple of putts to be in the money, one was about a 5 footer that we missed, four chances and we blew it.  Had dinner on the mountain, the steak sandwich is always a good choice, washed down with a nice cold beer.  Sun down is coming a little earlier each day.  Tonight, after sun set, in addition to the full moon, we howled at the full moon hope Ceil heard us, there was a layer of smoke just above the mountain tops that sort of glowed Burnt Orange.

Back at the RV, Sharon and I watched the last set of the Venus, Gerber match, great match, who were you pulling for, Venus, like the NY crowd?

Fore! at Tamarack

August 29, 2012, Day 82
3 days until departure

The day started with our usual weekly trip to the McCall Farmers Market.  There was a sign out front that said, Farmers Market will be open through October, weather permitting.  The locals say it doesn't start snowing here until around mid November, elevation is 5,000 feet.  We bought the necessary staples of raisin bread and carrot cake.  Then more grocery shopping at Paul's and Riddley's.

Back at the RV did some minor chores, checked the level in the house batteries and they were just fine.  Cleaned Air Conditioner filter on the inside.  It gets plenty of work in the afternoons and was quite dirty.

We had lunch in, a great hot dog with green chili and cheese.

In the late afternoon went to Tamarack with a group of guys. Al, Iuji, and Steve, to play in their Wednesday night scramble. Not as well attended as the Thursday night scramble at Jug Mountain.

The Tamarack resort is located about 20 from McCall just outside of Donnelly. It is in a great setting, in the foothill of the ski slope, with views of Lake Cascade and big pine trees. But it is sad. The resort ran on to some hard times in 2009 when the economy went south and has not recovered. They have all the infrastructure in place including a very nice hotel at the golf course. There are million plus, original market value, scattered around the golf course. There are quite a few abandoned structures with some very big structures partially completed. It is eerie and feels somewhat like a ghost town.

The golf course was a great lay-out, but lacking in maintenance and suffering from the past winter kill. It is a monster with many elevation changes, undulating greens, great views and challenging. The 18th green, at the end of a long par 5, with two carries, was 65 yards long. During warm up, with the pin located in the back, I two putted from the front of the green. Hit the first put as hard as I could. The smoke was very heave from the regional fires so the pictures of the views are not as good as they could be.

We ended up 3 under as a team, but left before the others finished. Maybe we cashed. The beer was cold.

On the way back to McCall we stopped for a bite and at local dive, where the waitress did not recommend the Burrito and suggested I order something else, I did.

Watch out!!!!!!!!! It May Eat You

August 28, 2012, Day 81, my dear Father's Birthday.

4 days left until departure

This morning we took down the Big Top, Orange sun shelter.  One more thing out of the way before we have to leave.  It was much easier that we expected, Sharon and I were able to do it ourselves.  The big thing was to follow the instructions and it went into its roll-around storage bag with ease.

Lunch was at Lardo's with Franz and Marcia and a few stuffed animals. It is quite well decorated with a number of old classic cash registers, almost reminded me of Droop's feed store. Lunch was very good along with a good cold Stella.

We had Happy Hour by ourselves as Franz was tired and hurting from his morning's tennis and Marcia was busy getting ready for line dancing at the Lodge in the RV park.

A small steak on the grill with the remainder of the Hell's Canyon.

Watched some US Open Tennis after dinner.

I Think I Broke a String

August 27, 2012, Day 81

Count down to departure 5 days

Tennis this morning, Franz had arranged a game with to others, Robert and Rod.  Robert is a local, looks a little hippie, long hair, rides a scooter, has some very good one liners.  Partner said we are in a hole, he responds, it's not like we are in WWII, he says keep down on the ball, it's like you are bulimic everything is coming up, too many to recount.  Rod has a house in McCall and is just breaking ground on a new home in Salt Lake.  Good games, but I still keep coming up short.  I think my tennis days are over here in McCall as on one of my very nice, off center shots, I broke the strings in my racket.  I don't understand why, according to the sticker on the racket, it was re-strung when I was in Oshkosh, May 6, 1993, I thought strings were supposed to last more than 20 years, like the roof on your house.  Maybe it was because I hadn't played any tennis for 20 years.  So this looks like a turning point in my tennis career comeback, re-string, new racket, or give it up.  Stay tuned, I think I will need Ronnie's help on this decision, I will see him sometime next week.

After tennis came back to the RV, cleaned up and Sharon and I went Whisky, Whiskey, shopping, depending on what you are looking for. Bought the ole staple, Jameson, and took a flier on some Idaho Gold, Canadian Whiskey, only $7.50 for a smaller bottle. It isn't very good.

Then it was lunch time and we had been looking at a place since we'd been here, Paradise Burgers. It was right on the main highway into town and I mean right on the highway. Sat outside as it was very warm inside, with all the sights and sounds of being on the main road. Sharon thinks the burgers were pre-cooked for the lunch rush that didn't materialize and so they re-heated them for us. Mine wasn't that bad, but not that great. Guess we'll have to take them off the list.

We had Happy Hour at our place, inside as the shade is sort of non-existent at that time of the evening. There were six of us and it was very comfortable inside the RV, with the AC running.

Dead Chicken on the Grill, with the last of the bottle of three buck chuck.

Fairwell to The Pan Cake House

August 26, 2012, Day 80

Well it's Sunday again and you know what that means, yep, The Pan Cake House.  But, this time its different as it is the last time before we depart McCall, almost brings a little tear to your eye.  It was great and hearty, with big mounds of food enough to last you all day, well at least until dinner.  I had my new favorite, self made pan cake sandwiches.  The front porch of The Pan Cake House is bordered by lots and lots of petunias, which really give it some color.  I needed to take a picture today as I was afraid if I waited any longer, they might freeze, been down to the lower 40's here in the mornings.  Our breakfast bunch was down to four, as the other two, Skip and Bev, left last week for the trip home.

In our minds we are beginning our count down to departure as we leave on September 1, so it's six days to departure. Not that we can do any real preparation, but we begin thinking about it. How are we going to get all this stuff put away?

We had Happy Hour at Jim and Helen's, they are from Boise and come here to escape the heat and smoke, nice people. Helen made some really nice artichoke dip things with green chili mixed in cooked in a small muffin pan, have to steal that recipe.

A lite dinner of Salmon on the grill, with some 3 buck chuck.

Smoke Jumbers

August 25, 2012, Day 79

we started the day with intentions to go to the Farmers Market, no real needs, just pick up a few things that may be of interest.  As we got closer to town we started seeing crowding in the streets.  When we started to turn into the McCall Hotel parking area, we had to stop for bicycles coming across the road toward the lake.  We made the turn into the parking area and there were tents set up in the court yard, Arts and Crapt fair of some sort.  Needless to say, all the parking spaces, which there are usually some, were all taken.  So, we turned around and headed back to home base, to wait for a better time.  Seem that in addition to the Arts and Crapt show there was a small triathlon, biking, swimming and running being held this weekend.

Around 11:30 we headed to the Smoke Jumper Base which is right on the airport up the hill from the RV park, they have guided tours most every day at 11:30. Our tour guide was Toby, in his rookie season. Hardly a rookie to fire fighting, with 5 years experience and schooling in Missoula fire school. There is a six weeks intensive training school at the base where they weed out those that can't make the grade. The lobby area contains lots of pictures of the day to day activity as well as mock-ups of the gear they wear to the fire, the suit and associated equipment that each Jumper wares weighs in excess of 90 pounds, including the main Chute and the reserve chute. We saw a short video of the smoke jumping activities including video of actual jumps. These people are like first responders that hopefully get to a fire as soon as it starts. Often they are called to a fire that consists of a single tree in hopes that they can prevent it from spreading into something bigger. The buildings in the base contain everything needed to support a 70 person team, which is a full compliment during the fire season. Most of the personnel there are on a temporary basis with a crew of about 10 being permanent and staying around year round. There is a chute packing room where the chute is laid out the length of the table and is meticulously gone over and packed with extreme care. Failures of chutes opening are almost non-existent. On the walls of the packing room are trophy heads that the people have taken during their time off from Jumping. There is a sewing room where most of the suits and clothing is sewn, along with repairs to chutes, harnesses and other wearable gear, is performed. There is a very tall, tower room, where all the chutes, after they are returned from the jump, are taken to be hung up and inspected for any necessary repairs or replacement. Chutes are retired after a certain number of years and jumps. We then went outside to the jump air plane, an Ottor, especially good for short landings and take offs, from forest type landing strips, and reliable. The plane seats 8 jumpers, two spotters and a pilot along with the cargo that is dropped at the time of the jump which consists of food, water, sleeping bags and other fire fighting gear. Everything that is taken into a fire, with exception to the packaging, which they usually burn in the fire, is packed out and is quite heavy. Also on the grounds are various towers where the Jumpers practice their skills of jumping from the plane and in the off chance they get stuck in a tree, practicing their skills of letting themselves down from the tree. There were some bronze mementos at the back of the building that were made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Smoke Jumpers.

In the evening Sharon and I enjoyed 9 holes of cheap, $10, golf at the McCall muni in perfect weather. My golf was a little better as I pared the last three holes.

Happy Hour followed golf which was followed by Lamb on the grill.  That was paired with the Hell's Canyon Reserve, Cab, which I had high hopes for and described in an earlier blog posting.  Well Sharon thought is was a little dry and while it had a nice nose, it was a little lite for a Cab.

Buffalo Gal

August 24, 2012, Day 69

Today was Friday and that means wash day for Sharon.  Friday is the preferred day, and she starts early, because it is the day the park starts to fill up with weekend visitors and the cabins haven't been rented for a while, so there is no big rush to the laundry.  A thankless but necessary job.  I try to help but it seems like I just keep getting in the way.

Franz had been trying all evening to arrange some tennis for this morning without much luck.  He called me and we had decided to go hit some around 10.  By that time Robert had called back and said he would be there.  So there were three of us and we decided to play 1 on 2 and we did that for an hour or so, when Rod arrived.  That gave us four and we played doubles, switching every set, for about an hour and a half.  Although I had some good points and good games, I still ended up with the black been.

With tennis interfering and washing taking priority, that meant we missed Smoke Jumpers again.  We'll get it in some day, maybe tomorrow or the day after that or the day after that.

That gave me time for a nice nap, you know you live longer if you take a nice nap, and a shower before we went to Buffalo Gal.

Franz and Marcia wanted to skip Happy Hour at the park, because of the drive to Donnelly, but Sharon and I snuck in a short one, before they arrived to pick us up.

Buffalo Gal is a small restaurant located about 15 miles down the road in Donnelly. It has about 10 tables in the restaurant plus a window where you could order take out or eat outside. Very busy and reservations are a must. I had called in early in the afternoon to make our request and when I gave my call back number my area code had been garbled. Luckily I called back and we got the confusion straightened out and our reservation confirmed for 6 PM. They have a very nice and varied menu. Sharon and I had a Tuna salad, which was excellent, and a beef shoulder tenderloin, rare, and it was rare. Along with an acceptable Pino. Franz and Marcia had the Snapper. Some simple deserts and we called it an evening. It was a very nice place with a very personable owner, that also plays tennis for exercise and relaxation, and we will be back before we leave. One of the nicer dinning experiences we have had in the area.

Not DAL - Out of the Money again

August 23, 2012, Day 68

We were planning on making a trip to the Smoke Jumpers place just down the road today, we understand that they give great tours, but I got over come by distractions, so hopefully we will make it tomorrow.

The distractions I had today related to the Longhorn Network, a sore subject among Longhorn Fans.  My frustration level had reached a peak, so I decided to drop a very polite email to The University of Texas Board of Regents to request them to put this item on their agenda, and I did, and I requested a response, and I got one.  Little did I know that there was a Board of Regents meeting scheduled for today, and there was an agenda item on the docket for a report on the LHN.  But, according to the news, it was pulled, at the last minute, by Pres. Powers, as he indicated that active discussions are under way at this time and did not want to do anything to disturb that process.  So we will see if it takes another two years.  Hopefully we will have a resolution soon, but that's what we thought a year ago.

Golf this evening at Jug Mountain, the Thursday evening scramble.  $20 bucks gets you 9 holes and a cart and the opportunity to win pro shop credit.  Played with Al, Iuji and Bennett, a sixteen year old that hits the ball a mile and more ofter than not (that translates to about 50%) he hits it in the fairway.  We couldn't support him when he did and when he didn't we floundered.  We were one under and finished just ahead of DAL.  Next week we decided we would try to do it again.

Below is a picture of my friend Dick, all strapped into a guilder, in which he took a guilder flight around the Durango area.  Also below is a link to his blog if anyone is interested in his recent Colorado adventures.

Gordon, Gordon, Gordon

August 22, 2012, Day 67

Well morning came and it was clear and no smoke, guess the big rains we had yesterday cleared it out.

The final phase of the Skip and Bev fair-well took place around 8:30, with the hooking up of the car behind the motor home, final hugs and hand shakes, and they roared off over the hill headed for new adventures.

Tennis this morning.  There was a little lack of or over communication on the part of the tennis participants.  First of the Gordon, Gordon, Gordon.  He sent a message that he could not find a fourth and that went around the horn, so we were only going to have three.  Franz contacted Al in the morning and he showed up as the fourth, however, the third did not show, so we played 1 on two for about an hour.  Come to find out the third thought that since there were only going to be three, we would cancel, so he just did not show.  So much for instant communication in today's world.  Some times these old farts just don't get it.

After tennis Sharon and I went to Jug Mountain for lunch.  Not only do they have a beautiful golf course setting, they also have a nice place for dining and viewing and good food also.

Happy Hour came around and Franz and Marcia, begged off. Franz was somewhere in Idaho on his motorcycle and Marcia was ailing from aches and pains. So I went to the Tennis Clinic.

The second and final of the Gordon, Gordon, Gordon. He was directing the clinic, again, giving his doubles strategy. When you go to one of these clinics, you hope you come away a little sore form hitting so many tennis balls. When I come back from one of Gordon's sessions, only my ears are sore. I swore the last time that it would be the last time and now I am sure this was the last time.
After I returned to the RV park and soaked my ears in ice packs, we had Happy Hour, a nice way to relax.  In fact it was so nice that we did not want to cook.  So up the top of the hill we went, near the air port to Si Bueno for a light Mexican meal of tacos.
