Post Arrival

After we settled in I took the truck to the dealer and had them run it through a complete diagnostic check to make sure there were no lingering problems from the check engine light.  They did and there were none.  Thanks to everyone that helped with this little hick up.

I also made a trip to AT&T to check on my "off network" problem.  According to the "off network" specialist there are no "off network" issues and I am not in "off network" Jail..

Every thing was just fine at the house after our three month absence.

Thanks for coming along on the ride.

Home at Last

September 13, 2014, Saturday Day 94

It was cold in Lubbock this morning, 47 degrees, thought we had gotten out of the cold country,

We were waiting for it to get light, but wanted to get off early to beat the football crowds, Tech was playing Arkansas this afternoon.  We left at 9 and were able to miss all the football traffic.

It was another day of smooth sailing and the truck performed perfectly; thank you Jesus.

We had a pre-determined stop coming into Sun City.  A stop at the Andice General Store for a GCCB.

When we got there my customary parking place was taken by police cars with flashing lights and an ambulance parked if front of the general store.  We parked in the church parking lot just down the street.  Across the street was a manned water stop for a bicycle race in the area.  We stopped and talked to one of the bike people and said that some one had run through the tee coming down Williams Drive and had hit two parked cars in the General Store parking lot.  Driver was taken off in the ambulance and his car by tow truck.  Other cars were just bent.  Our bike person also informed us the the neighbor's cat from across the road was run over and killed earlier in the day crossing the road.  I guess that curiosity does kill the cat, but we made it out alive.

The GCCB was great as usual and afterward we headed down the road and parked at the house around 4 PM.   Looks like they are cutting back on the General Store offerings and favoring the inside burger eating more.  Good move.

Another great trip in the record books, this one possibly more interesting than the others.

Jesus at Bozo's

September 12, 2014, Friday Day 93

It's time to get on the road again, 9 AM, waiting for the early morning traffic to lighten up, headed for Lubbock.

Very misty out this morning, almost seemed a little like winter.  A little wind in our face headed up through Tijeras canyon, toward Santa Rosa.

And that's when it happened, the first bad luck we have had with the Truck in all the time we have been pulling the 5th Wheel.  About 70 miles out from Santa Rosa on Interstate 40, the check engine light came on and our speed dropped from 65 mph to 45 mph, with the foot feed to the floor and the engine at 2,000 rpms.  This started a series of amazing coincidences.

I called AAA to see if I could get road side assistance, if needed.  They responded that they did not have any AAA repair shops in the area and that I would probably need to go to a dealer.  I found that very hard to believe as Cline's Corner is a big travel stop site and Santa Rosa is a big trucker place.  I asked then to give me a phone number of a dealer in Amarillo as that was the next biggest place headed east.  I talked to the dealer and she said they could not get someone to look at the diesel truck until Tuesday; and this was Friday.  So Albuquerque was the next bet.  My cell service was indicating that I was "off network", which, based on prior experience was not a good deal.  I called 611 and got them to authorize me to use my phone in the "off network" mode as I was in an emergency situation.

I called my good buddy Droop to get him to check on Albuquerque dealers to see, that if I was towed in, they would be able to take a look at my vehicle.  By this time we had slowed down to 25 mph.  Droop just happened to be with his friend that does truck rebuilding and maintenance and when told of my situation suggested that it sounded to him like a fuel filter.  Also Droop mentioned that one time when he was traveling through Santa Rosa, he had truck trouble and stumbled onto Bozo's Truck Repair and Wrecker, and he also owns a car museum across the street, Route 66.  I asked if it would hurt if I continued to drive the truck in this condition until I reached Santa Rosa and the feeling was that it would not hurt.  I was able to look up Bozo's using my I phone and got a phone number.  I called and talked to Juan, he said that he had a fuel filter and to come on in.  He couldn't guarantee that that would fix my problem, but he could get it replaced.  So, off to Bozo's we go at 25 mph.

We finally found the garage and located Juan, it was cold in Santa Rosa, 40 plus degrees and the wind blowing at a pretty good clip.  He located the new filter and replaced the old one.  He indicated that it looked pretty clogged.  I started it up and it seemed to be reving pretty good.  I told him that I would take it on a test drive on the interstate to see if I could get it up to speed.  I did and it did.  I returned to Bozo's and said everything seemed to be functioning as normal and that we were going to take off toward Lubbock.  At that time the check engine light was still on and Juan suggested that we stop at a dealer in Clovis and have them check it out, I agreed.  Got in the truck and re-started it and drove it a few feet and the check engine light went off.  I reported this to Juan and he flashed me a thumbs up and said your good to go.  From now on I am calling Juan, Jesus.  The charge for these services were not unreasonable.

Jesus

After we left Santa Rosa we stopped in Fort Sumner for a quick burger and one of the nicer places.

The truck ran fine and that evening we made it the rest of the way to Lubbock arriving around 6 PM, with the time change.  Happy, Happy, Happy Hour and some hot soup and a good nights rest, thanking our lucky stars.

Never Forget Willard's Birthday

September 11, 2014 Thursday Day 92

I used to never remember Willard's birthday, but now I will never forget it.  It is September 11.

This morning we had a lot of things to do to get ready for the final push back home.  It started with breakfast at Twisters, a local fast food Mexican place with very good breakfast burritos.  I chose the the one with eggs and ham and smothered in green Chile, just can't miss an opportunity for some good green Chile.

Then it was off to fine some cheap fuel.  There was a Chevron, out a little ways on Coors blvd which advertised diesel for $3.469, best price we had seen in months, so that's where we went.  Can't ever go wrong with Chevron, can you?

Stopped at play it again Sports, Droop's favorite golf store, to see if they had anything of need.  Specifically looking for Ping G10 hybrids, from 26 degree and higher.  No luck, nothing of interest.

Back toward the RV park we stopped at Camping World, needed some toilet chemical.  While we were there we took a look at the latest in 5th wheels and Motor homes.  You never know when you are going to find something you just can't live without.

Back at the RV we did some final preparations, put away as much stuff as we could in hopes of an early get away.

That evening, after happy hour we treated ourselves to one last New Mexico, Mexican food dinner at the Range Cafe on Menaul.  I had a green Chile relleno plate with a green Chile fajita enchilada.

Now we are set for tomorrow morning and the final legs back to Sun City.

Cochiti

September 10, 2014, Wednesday Day 91

Today was Golf at Cochiti day.

Droop came by and picked me up at 10:00.  As is the custom, Droop and Tom, Tom comes down from Jemez, meet at the Burger King in Bernalillo.  They grab a burger and then drive on to Cochiti.  The one that doesn't drive pays for the Burgers.  Droop drove and paid for the burgers.  We were there early, Tom was there a little later.

We arrived at Cochiti around noon for our 1 PM tee time, we met up with our fourth, Leo.  All four of us went to High School in Los Alamos at the same time.  Leo is the better golfer.

The course and facilities were in excellent shape.  A few years back, it was run down and the course was in bad shape.  They have really brought it back and now it is a really nice place to play golf and enjoy yourself.  After golf we had a nice cold beer and then headed back to Bernalillo and then on to Albuquerque and Nine Mile Hill.  Got back a little after 7 PM, long day.

Sharon and I had Happy Hour, Lamb on the grill and finished up the bottle of TBC.

Pizza Barn

September 9, 2014, Tuesday Day 90

Big Day today.

Picked up Droop at 9 AM, after he finished feeding and headed to Modelo's Mexican Food Joint, great food, take out only.  Super Breakfast Burritos.

Then it was off to see a Motor Home, that Droop discovered one of his buddies, Dave, had at his shop doing some work on.  It was a hell of a price, $29,000, but as we discovered once we got there is was all used up.  It was a 1999 or earlier 40 foot Winnebago Ultima, rode hard and put up wet.

Then is was on to Willard and Debby's place, they now live in Moriarty, New Mexico, moving there recently.  We started thinking, how many places have Willard and Debby lived, and we came up with 10.  Los Alamos, Santa Fe, two different places, Maxwell, Edgewood, Elephant Butte, Raton, Pueblo.

They have a nice place there and are nearer family than they were in Pueblo, which is not always a good thing.  We had a good visit and then headed off to the Pizza Barn in Edgwood for a nice lunch of Green Chile Bread Sticks, Pizza and a cold beer.  It was Debby's treat.

We said our good byes, and headed back to Albuquerque, dropped Droop off and then to Costco for a Booze run.  Costco sells liquor inside its stores in Albuquerque so you can get some good Costco prices.  We loaded up.

Back at the RV, we did happy hour but passed on dinner, as the Burrito and the Pizza were still in play.

A Beauty Day

September 8, 2014, Monday Day 89

Today was Beauty Day, Sharon and I had planned this for a long time.

First off it was to Taco Cabana, you know when you get to a Taco Cabana you are getting close to home.  Then off to get Fred a hair cut and Sharon and Fred a pair of pedicures.  All was successful.  Did some necessary shopping and found this DQ card.

That afternoon Droop and I got together for some golf and Sandia Golf Club which is right next to the Sandia Casino.  The course is very nice and the views are great.  Droop had the feeling that the course, that is the place where the green grass is, was very narrow, or that's what his golf balls thought.

After golf Sharon and I had HH along with dead Chicken on the grill.

Albuquerque or Bust

September 7, 2014, Sunday Day 88

Up in the morning and on to Albuquerque.  Not a long drive, got there about 1:30.

We got set up and gave Droop a call and he came over and brought my EBay sand wedge, you know the one I lost, but didn't loose, but ordered a new one on Ebay, that sand wedge.  We talked for a while and he refused a cocktail as there is a high alert, zero tolerance, for suspected DWI, in Albuquerque.  So we declined also.

Later that evening Sharon and I went to Hot Tamales, as I had a serious craving for a Stuffed Sopapia, and they did not disappoint.  What a nice thing to be back in New Mexico and get some good Northern New Mexico Mexican food.

Droop and I discussed playing some golf while we were in town.

Meteor?

September 6, 2014, Saturday Day 87

We left Saint George around 9 in the morning and headed toward Flagstaff, through Las Vegas.

On the way toward Flagstaff after turning the corner in Kingman Arizona and getting on IH 40, we called into the RV park in Flagstaff and were informed that they did not have any pull throughs available.  So we changed gears and headed on to Winslow, Arizona, where they had pull throughs available at the Meteor RV park.

It was a nice park, just 20 short of Winslow, which made for an easy drive into Albuquerque the next day.

I had a small problem there with my credit card.  I used it, no problem, to pay for the RV park fee.  After we unhooked and set up, I went back to the office where they had a gas station.  The price was a little high, but no higher than I had paid in Idaho, and the convenience was worth something.  Filled up, $162 worth of fuel.  Went inside to pay with my credit card and it was declined.  You know the rest, why, why, why, just used it, on and on.  It was determined it was a bank problem, so wanting to clear up the situation and not just use another card, I got on the phone with the bank.  I am now the best of friends with everyone at the bank.  Approximately 30 minutes later my transaction was completed and everyone is happy.  And for the record my card has worked ever since.

We did have a nice happy hour and dinner of Salmon with left over pasta from the Cliff Restaurant.

Oh, yea, I forgot to mention, there was a football game this evening.  I did not get to watch it, or listen to very much of it, but I guess is was better that way.  Hook 'em Horns, next week.

Meteor?

Happy Anniversary, again

September 5, 2014, Friday Day 86

Ronnie invited me for golf, he had an 8:30 tee time for 9 holes at the Saint George Golf Club and we were joined by two of his friends, Paul and Mark, the same two we played with when we came through on the way up to McCall.  The early morning tee time was bearable as the temperatures were rising as we were finishing.  There is a significant up hill climb from the golf course to the club house, that I did not think I was going to make.  The final few steps were just putting one foot in front of the other.

After golf Sharon had a little grocery shopping to at Smith's and while we were there I filled up, as they had the lowest price in town.  Then to WalMart and on to lunch.  We ate at a little place near WalMart, named Peppers.  On the menu they had Stuffed Sopapias, which sounded great as my mouth was watering for some good northern New Mexico, Mexican food.  The Sopapia was un-recognizable, but the filling was good.  I asked the waiter if he had ever had a Sopapia in New Mexico, he said never.  I told him that the next time he goes to New Mexico he should try one, he would be surprised.

In the afternoon I went to the local bowling alley to watch Ronnie play in his first league match of the season.  I was expecting to witness a 300, but he came up just short.

That evening we had our delayed Anniversary Dinner that Sharon had planned for the way up to McCall with Marcia and Franz.  Marcia and Franz were nice enough to allow us to use their home and gas grill, for the occasion. We were joined by Judy and Ronnie and Margaret and Eddie.  The dinner was great, the drinks were great, the wine was great, the dessert was was great and the company was even better.

Doesn't Marcia Look Great.

September 4, 2014 Thursday Day 85

Morning temperature was much warmer, no more heater necessary for the balance of the trip home.

We left Provo around 9 AM and and arrived in Saint George around 1:30 PM.  The main reason for going through Saint George is to check up on Marcia and see how she is progressing after her ride in the dirt.

It was cool on the trip from Provo and I checked the temperature in Cedar City, it was 76 degrees. By the time we got to Saint George, 55 miles down the hill, it was a balmy 95 and Ronnie said it was expected to be 98 and it made it to 100.  Quite a change from where we had been.

Sharon and I had Happy Hour with Marcia and Franz at their house and Marcia looked great.  She has shed her sling and was able to lift her hands and arms over her head.  Can't say much for Franz he looked pretty much the same.

That evening Sharon and I had dinner in at the Cliff Restaurant which was great, great service, great food, great setting.

He shouldn't put them so close to the road when I am driving by

September 3, 2014, Wednesday Day 84

It was 42 degrees again this morning and looking like its about to keep getting colder as the days move on,

Do you hear him in the background warming up, yep, it's Willie, and we are On The Road Again.

Left this morning at 8 AM with the goal of making it to Provo and we did, around 5 PM.  Not without some big bottle necks in Salt Lake City, but it was still better that going through Nevada on highway 93.

After crunching a guy's RV display set up next to a road in the RV park, Lake Side RV Park, we headed out for fuel and some dinner.  The fuel we found at Smith's and dropped a cool $150.  Then it was on to Wendy's for dinner and a frosty.

The reason we pushed to Provo was to get on the other side of Salt Lake City and making for an easier drive into Saint George the next day.

Final Dinner in McCall

September 2, 2014, Tuesday Day 83

Temperature this morning was 42 degrees.

Last day in McCall.  Sharon has a hair cut appointment and after that we went to STAX for lunch. The sandwiches were still as big and as good as ever.  Filled up with fuel $4.179 per gallon.  Didn't buy much fuel in McCall.

This is the final day to get things put away because we are planning to leave early in the morning tomorrow.

That evening we had Happy Hour at our place,  Nancy and Al came down as well as Bev and Skip, Bev and Skip are planning on leaving tomorrow morning also,

Sharon and I went with Nancy and Al for dinner at Shore Lodge for our final meal in McCall.  Bev and Skip did not join us, as they had been there the other evening.

Wow, it's getting colder

September 1, 2014, Monday Day 82

Morning temperature today was 41 degrees, that's getting very close to freezing.  Sure glad Sharon was able to get dressed with the heater on.

Today is was fixen to get ready to get ready day.  We had to start picking of all the stuff we had scattered out at our camp site for the last two months.  It took a while.

But I did manage to get in my final, final round of golf with Al, late in the afternoon.  They still had cheap rates because it was a holiday.

Back at the park we had Happy Hour and lamb on the grill and I am sure there was a red wine in there somewhere.

Baylor Playing Football on Sunday?

August 31, 2014, Sunday Day 81

Morning temperature was a cold 50 degrees.

It rained last night and it was cold in the RV this morning.  One of the propane tanks ran out of gas this morning  and I had to switch it over to the other tank.  But not before Sharon got dressed in the cold, boy did I catch it.

I was Sunday, and, well you know what.  It was also Labor Day Weekend and we wanted to get a seat before the big crowd, so we went at 8:15 and it almost worked.

The RV Park has such good service.  When we got back from breakfast I called the office and told them I needed some propane and the tank would be setting out by our site.  It was just minutes before a worker bee came by in his golf cart and picked it up.  Five minutes later he returned he returned it and said the invoice would be in the office.

Today is Darby's birthday, John Hockett, the friend I visited when we went through Phoenix.  He is the second of the five of us, that keep in close touch, to turn 72.  Used to seem old, but not any longer.

This evening I was playing the final nine holes of golf at the McCall Golf Club, with Steve and Skip.

Sharon and I had Happy Hour after golf back at the park, and TPH left over lunch. from the day before, for dinner.

There is a very big crowd in the RV Park because of the Labor Day weekend, no spaces are available.

What's going on here, Baylor playing football on Sunday.  Pretty soon they will be having dances and the co-eds will be posing for Play Boy.

Sunday, August 31, 2014

Finally, Game Day, Hook 'em

August 30, 2014, Saturday Day 80

Morning temperature was 52 degrees.

The other day Skip was saying they went to TPH for lunch and had a great Ruben sandwich.  That was enough for me, we're going.

But first it was off to Gallery 55 for Sharon to pick up another trinket.  This trip I took some time for a few pictures of the items that are in the shop, some very interesting stuff.  There is one artist, Alan Giltzow that does a great job with fishes, we have a couple in our house.

Then it was on to TPH for lunch, the Ruben did not disappoint, what is not pictured is the bowl clam chowder.  You get your monies worth when you eat at TPH.  We saved half of the sandwichs for lunch tomorrow.

After lunch Sharon and I went to Tamarack and Jug to spend my winnings from the Wednesday and Thursday scrambles played in over these two months.  I picked up a couple of shirts and a ball marker at Tamarack and another shirt at Jug.  It didn't cost me too much over my winnings.

After a long wait and twice as much hype, it's game day and the debut of The University of Texas Longhorns under head coach Charlie Strong.  I was excited because I had the opportunity to WATCH the game on my iPad, using the ESPN Watch app, hooked into the Suddenlink Longhorn Network. Worked for a while then the WiFi network started choking my feed as there was too much streaming.  I had to switch over and listen to most of the game, over the band, via the Internet, which they did not restrict.  The results were good, Texas, under the direction of Charlie Strong is currently undefeated.

Last night was the Labor Day party put on by the McCall RV Resort, complete with hot dogs, brats, and beer.  Also the Bottom Line provided the live music.  During the party it began to rain, but it was not rained out, the band merely relocated to the inside of the lodge and the party continued with dancing, singing, eating and just a little beer.  Thanks, G7.
