Oscar's Cafe

June 27, 2014 Day 16

Today was golf day, first time since we have been on the road, felt good to get back on the course.  We played in the morning because it was cooler, 8:21 tee time.  Ronnie put together a group of a couple of his friends Paul and Mark.  We played at St.  George Golf Club and if you want to post your score it's St. George G C.  We walked 9 holes, with a pull cart except for Paul who is recovering from a knee replacement and felt he needed to ride.  The front nine was a par 37 and I shot 42 with a birdie and a double Bogey.  The birdie was a the number 4, par 3, Swan hole.

After golf we went by Ronnie's church to see his handy work on the new auditorium addition that was constructed mostly by volunteers.  It turned out very nice and added a significant amount of new space for their growing congregation.

That evening we went to Oscar's Cafe, located at the entrance to Zion National Park.  Oscars is a place that we had visited a few years past when we came to Zion with Ronnie and friends.  They have terrific Mexican food, as close to New Mexican, Mexican food you can find outside of New Mexico.  I had pork enchiladas with, you guessed it, green Chile and it was not disappointing.  It is Utah and it was a beer and wine kind of place, I had the house sangria.

After dinner we went into Zion and up through the tunnels. The more that mile long tunnels construction began in 1920 and was completed in  1930 and dedicated on July 4, 1930.  Quite a feat.

Zion is about an hour away from St. George and upon our return we were ready for some ice cream.  There was a new Culver's in town that Ronnie wanted to try.

DVD, check

June 26, 2014 Day 15

Walked to breakfast again today, Denny's.  It seems to me that breakfast seems to be a little better if you can put it with a little exercise.  Also relieves the guilt complex a bit.  Senior omelet with a side of fruit is not too bad.  After breakfast I walked, more exercise, to Radio Shack to check out their DVD players.  Didn't take long they had zero, none, zilch.  Sales person said they were not selling well so they decided not to stock them any more.  I guess that's one way to confirm a slow selling product.

Back at the RV I convinced Sharon to let me go to Walmart with her, if I did not tag along, she hates it when I tag along, but I needed, wanted, a DVD player and Walmart seemed to be a likely place.  To make sure she let me go with her, I bought lunch.  Applebee's, no mob scene but quite busy.  The highlight was the Cherry Lime Ade.

At Walmart we split up as I was directed and I headed for the DVD department.  As luck would have it they had a couple to choose from, I choose the small Sony player for under $30, what a deal.  It's the small black thing on the top shelf, no the silver thing below, that's the one that crapped.

Today was a great day temperature wise, overcast all day and stayed in the mid 90's during the heat of the day.

We had HH with some lamb on the grill capped off with a 3 buck chuck cab.

Head for the Cliffs

June 25, 2014 Day 14

Today I needed a distraction, so I thought about hitting some golf balls.  I have not picked up a club since before we left Sun City.  Searching the Internet I settled on the driving range at Dixie Red Hills Golf Course.  It was about three miles away up Bluff Road.  Seemed like a nice place on the side of a hill.  A large bucket was $5, and off I went.  Pretty steep trail down to the ninth green and the driving range, even steeper coming back up after hitting balls or finishing 9 holes.  The exercise did me good and the practice did me even better, some good, some not so good.  Hoping to get in a round sometime this week.

This evening we had Happy Hour with Marcia and Franz at their house way up on the hill, along with a friend from McCall last year, Eddie P.  It's amazing how trends get started and it must be a St. George thing, but the olives that Franz served Sharon had a price tag on them of $.25.  There house has a very nice view out over the valley and the city of St. George.

Another view of the Temple

Cliff Side, view from Marcia & Franz's house

We had dinner at the Cliff Side restaurant which was very enjoyable and with the same view as we had from their living room.  Cliff Side is a remodeled place that went in dis-repair when the city Airport relocated south of town.

When we got back to the RV park I took another evening walk, but today I did not make my goal.

Things will be Cooking in Wells

June 24, 2014 Day 13

Started off with Sharon doing laundry.  We've been on the road for almost two weeks and the hampers are getting full, so it's time for the necessary task and Sharon is up to the challenge.  She wanted to start early while it was cool and in hopes that the laundry room would be empty so she could get multiple machines.  It worked and she was finished in no time.  Well it seemed like no time to me.

I went to the office to extend our stay here at Temple View for a couple of days as we are going to caravan up to McCall with Marcia and Franz and will leave on Sunday morning.  I'm pissed at the office.  Wanted to extend two days and she asked for my AAA card for the discount, I said you don't need my AAA card as we are on a weekly rate and that discount is better than the AAA discount.  She said, Oh no, you have two extra days and they are at the daily rate.  I asked, why not just put it on the end of our weekly stay and give us the same rate.  No she said, you would have to sign up for another 7 days, the computer won't let me add on days.  The computer always the computer never human intervention.  I didn't bother arguing any more than explaining my logic as I new it was a lost cause, so I paid the full freight, less the AAA discount, after I went back to the RV and picked up my AAA card and displayed it to the computer behind the desk.

Back at the RV, after returning from the office, for a second time, I made reservations for our trip up north. First stop is Wells, Nevada, staying at the Angel Lake RV Park, not to be confused with the Angel Lake Camp Ground.  To get the full story you will have to talk to Franz.  Since there are not many eating establishments in Wells, we have planned to cook dinner for the four of us.  There is one spot of interest that was recently pointed out to us.  Bella's Hacienda Ranch, a brothel catering to your every need.  The next stop, if we have enough energy to continue on, the next morning, will be Eagle, Idaho, at the High Valley RV Park, owned by the same family that owns the McCall RV Resort.  This will be our anniversary and we will find a nice place to eat that evening.

Lunch today was at Chick-Fil-A, a real mob scene.  Line stretched out the door and people were stacked everywhere.  But, Sharon had a calendar card and the month of June allowed her a free Chicken Sandwich, we we enjoyed our free Chicken Sandwich with the mob.

With us cooking dinner on Sunday night we had to make a Costco run the get just the right kind of meat, beef tenderloin steaks and picked up some lamb chops and managed to find a couple of shirts, but that's all.

The steak would not be complete without a fine Bernese sauce, according to Marcia, so Walmart here we come, along with a few Caffeine Free Diet Cokes in the 2 liter bottles.

Whoops, almost forgot, for desert after the Chicken Sandwich, we shared a Very Berry Sundae.

Back at the RV we had Happy Hour, by the way these are non-sponsored, so make sure you get your reservation in for sponsoring one soon, and some Salmon on the grill, with a nice fine white chard.

After dinner I went for an evening walk to the SG City Park.  Lots of action here tonight, go carts speeding around the track, lots of kids at the skate park, and the miniature golf course was lively also.  And the highlight of the evening was that I made my steps goal.

Jersey Boys/Bring your own Olives

June 23, 2014 Day 12

Started this day with a walk.  I'm trying to get it 30 to 45 minutes a day and to get my step count over 10,000, fit bit you know.  Got to try and stay ahead of the competition.  Walked to a city park were they have a skate board set-up, ball fields and picnic areas, very nice.

It was a smoothie for breakfast, strawberries, kiwi, yogurt, protein powder and Pom juice. Yummy.

We made arrangements to go to a movie with Marcia and Franz and we chose Jersey Boys, recently released directed by Clint Eastwood.  All four of us really enjoyed it and we had all seen the Vegas stage show. The music was great as always and the movie seemed to be more in depth as to the personal happenings of the group, as compared to the stage show.  Try it, I think you will like it.

After the movie we went to George's on the Corner for dinner and a drink.  Utah has some funny liquor laws.  I ordered my usual, Jameson on the rocks.  When the drink came it looked like a skimpy pour and it had one big cube.  When I looked at the drink I asked the waitress if I could have a double and she said no. I could order another drink, but only after I finished that one.  I asked her if I could get some crushed ice in place of the one big cube, she said yes. S ordered her usual, with triple olives.  Only when we got the check did we discover that they charged extra for the olives, $.25 each, $.75.  We'll know next time to bring our own olives.

Bonus Post

Some new and different thing we put in our RV, for and during this trip.

Seems like every year we need a new one, this year was no different.  Notice the outside temperature, pretty hot.

Indoor/Outdoor thermometer
Bought a new computer at the house, thanks to Steven, an all in one what you see is what you get, no towers or things hiding under the desk.

New all in one Dell
Costco had a great sale on big fans, very helpful for moving around all the warm air.
Tall fan
We needed new rugs, so says S, as the backs of the old ones were wearing out.

In front of Kitchen island
New much smaller Keurig, one cup coffee maker and Kcup carousel. I was opposed to these things in the past, but it sure makes making coffee easier in the morning.

One cup Keurig
Had to bring the damn scale.
Damn scale
Toilet
More new rugs, same reason as above.
Bathroom sink

It was part of a two fan package at Costco.

Just Like We Need More Stuff

June 22, 2014 Day 11

Walked to breakfast again today and met up with Franz and Marcia.  We had a nice relaxing breakfast and just sat and talked about things that had gone on since last summer.  We made plans to caravan with them up to McCall and plan to leave on June 29.

After breakfast we decided we had some necessary and some not so necessary shopping to do, so off we went.  First stop was Lowes as we have a Lowes card and we get a 5% discount, it get an extension cord.  If forgot to pack the one I have at home.  So much for lists, if you don't put it on the list, chances are it will not get packed.  We also needed an Indoor/Outdoor thermometer as all the ones we have went kaput, seems like we need to buy a new one every year, hope this one makes it through the summer.  It's always nice to know when it is over 100 outside and hopefully when we get to McCall it will tell us if we need a jacket.  I would have bought a couple of these chairs but no place to store them.

Then it was off to Bed Bath and Beyond with S armed with her trusty folder of coupons, to shop for new/replacement rugs for the RV, seems the other ones were warn out on the back.  We were successful and saved soooooo much money.

As luck would have it, there was an In-N-Out burger at the end of the parking lot so we stopped In and had some lunch.  Us and a hundred other people, some with screaming kids with bad manners.

Then it was for groceries to re-stock the produce and other things that go bad if you don't use them.

I don't even need to go shopping I have people shopping for me.  Someone has been in search of the perfect on course drinking vessel and they think they have now have it.

It got hot enough back at the RV park that I decided to go to the pool.  It was warm and quite relaxing as I was the only one there.  At first I thought that I had forgotten how to swim, but I got the hang of it after a while.  After the pool a little more TV watching, golf X's two and the US soccer match, thought they had them until the last, almost like the Longhorns.

Happy Hour and some dead chicken on the grill.  It was a monster chicken breast and cooked up nice and juicy and very tender,

We got news today, from Gretchen, that the Black Acura is finally leaving the family.  It has served the family well.  I used it for a number of years when I commuted back and forth from Austin to San Marcos when I was working at Thermon.  Steven used it for a number of years when he went to Baylor.  Kristen used it from the time she got her drivers license until just now.  It is going to a good home, right across the street from where they live.  If you look closely at the picture you can see a tear in Kristen's eye.
