It was a great trip, and good vacation. Renewed an old friendship with my friend Mike Barns and his wife Sally, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Had a good visit with our son Curtis in Oshkosh, Wisconsin while also seeing our friends Ben and Nancy Schneider as well as Bill and Pam Neubauer.
Headed across the North to South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore, something that I had seen many years ago and Sharon had not. Then through Montana and into Idaho spending a few days in Coure 'd Lane before heading back to McCall where we spent most of our time.
In McCall we renewed old friends and made new ones while enjoying the absolutely perfect Summer weather. Spent a lot of good quality time with Franz and Marcia, Eddie P and Margaret and Al and Nancy Butler.
Took a nice side trip to Penn Valley, California to visit with Lynn and Jacque Wilson and taste some of the great wine they make at their winery.
On the way back from Idaho we got to spend some time with Ronnie and Judy in Saint George, Utah and Norm Atkins in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
All an all a very good experience and we look forward to doing it, or something similar next year. You know it gets really hot and humid here in Texas during the summer.

Lubbock In Your Rear View Mirror
September 11, 2013, Wednesday Day 104
Happy Birthday Willard, I'll catch you soon.
You know you are headed in the right direction when you see Lubbock in your rear view mirror. We left at 8:30 and packed some snacks for the road so we wouldn't loose any time.
My friend Dick said our route should take us by the Andice General Store, and it did, and we stopped for a quick burger before we got to the house.
While we were gone they completed Ronald Regan Boulevard into the back of Sun City and we used that as our way back into the compound.
We made it back at 3:30 and immediately began to un-pack the RV so we could return it to storage sometime the next day. We gave up at dark time as it was a hot day. We had ice cream for dinner and caught up with Steven, Grandson, College Graduate, Dell Employee, and House Sitter when he finished his work day. Total trip 8,800 miles.

Half Way Home
September 10, 2013, Tuesday Day 103
We left Albuquerque at 8:30 mountain time heading for Lubbock, half way home.
Nothing eventful, just a long drive that we have made hundreds of times over the years.
We stayed at the Lubbock RV Park which is near the airport just off Loop 289 east and I only made one wrong turn. I didn't think I wanted to go to Amarillo, but I was wrong.
We had a nice lamb chop dinner on the grill, paired with some Andi & David red. Of course we had Happy Hour.

Hot Tamales
September 9, 2013, Monday Day 102
Today we were getting ready for the final push. We will leave in the morning headed to the half way point, Lubbock.
So today Sharon and I went for Pedicures and the local pedicure place on Coors and afterward we went on to Hot Tamales, for my final Green Chili fix, a stuffed sopapia and it was everything I expected.
Back on nine mile hill, late in the evening Droop came to say his goodbye's and we had a little and then a little and then a little more Happy Hour. Droop left his car on top of nine mile hill and Sharon drove him home with me sitting in the back seat.

Little Limb, Big Problem
September 7, 2013, Saturday Day 100
I always thought that 100 was a lucky number, but they say things always happen in three's.
Started the day with the Cowboy Breakfast at the KOA, while Sharon posed for a picture with the Petrified Tree. Then I saw something I have never seen before, a kids toy.
On the way out of the park I was trying to avoid one tree and opted to go out another way. Who knew such a little limb could cause such a big problem. Won't know how big it is until I get the estimate for repair of my rubber roof that I snagged with the tree limb in a few places.
Well don't cry over spilled mile, it was on to Albuquerque for a couple of days on the top of nine mile hill. Droop came over for a little Happy Hour and after, Sharon and I went for dinner at Applebee's on Coors Road.

Around Vegas Baby
September 6, 201, Friday Day 99
We left Saint George at 8:55 and headed toward Las Vegas, but didn't stop, as the friends we have in Vegas, that we saw last year, are preparing to move back to the Austin area, so it was around Vegas Baby.
So we high tailed it to Holbrook, a little past Flagstaff to get a head start for our drive to Albuquerque the next day.
Had a little scrape in a Flying J parking lot just outside of Flagstaff. There were not any rest stops, that were open, since we left Saint George and we were getting a little hungry and need a rest. Saw a great place right next to the RV pumps and was pulling in when someone started blowing their horn. I did not stop in time and was not paying attention to the big thing I was pulling behind me and I made a little scrape on the brand new aggie color pick up. Left a little white mark about three inches long and about a quarter inch wide, not a big deal. We exchanged information and he said he would be in touch with me. Still waiting. Oh yea, we ate at the McDonald's there, quarter pounder with cheese and a cone.
Then it was on to Holbrook for the night and a full tank of fuel for the morning, and Happy Hour.

Hot Golf
September 5, 2013, Thursday Day 98
We met Judy and Ronnie at the Black Bear for breakfast, they rode their bicycles from the house.
Sharon and I then did some necessary shopping at Walmart and we hit the Zion Outlets, Eddie Bauer and Izod. We skipped Costco as Utah has some strict liquor laws selling only at state owned stores. We'll hit Costco in Albuquerque.
Ronnie and I decided we needed a little exercise even though it was hot in the afternoon, so we played nine holes at one of the local Muni's. I gave him a shot a hole and he beat me by two. Gave him way too many strokes.
Filled up with diesel before our trip out in the morning. Gas buddy told me that there was diesel at Smith's for $3.749, I didn't believe it, but I went there any way. Sure enough that was the price, best price I have seen in a long time.
That evening we went to Judy and Ronnie's for dinner. Excellent hamburgers with a different seasoning that Judy had picked up at Costco. We'll have to try that. Ronnie likes to use his George Foreman Grill, cooking inside where it's cool.

Highway History
September 4, 2013, Wednesday, Day 97
We left Wells, Nevada, at 9:00 our time.
One of the reasons we took this route to get to Saint George was it was recommended by Eddie P. As it turns out it was a good road for the most part and not much traffic, but is was two lane and there was not much traffic, it was lonely. We both got to wondering what if we had some trouble, with no one around how would we get help. We decided that next time we will stick to the interstate.
We did run into some Highway History along the way. We were on the Pony Express Route, which was the Stage Coach line before that and it was the same route the telegraph took when it was installed.
Made it to Saint George at 3:30, it was 101 and getting hotter. Got hooked up as soon as possible to get the AC flowing.
We had dinner at George's on the Corner, a recommendation from Marcia. After dinner we went over to our friends, Judy and Ronnie for desert, I've known Ronnie since the fourth grade and we continue to keep in touch.

Leaving in the Rain
September 3, 2013, Tuesday Day 96
We left early today, early for us. The target was 9 and we were pulling out at 09:04. Marcia and Franz stopped by, in the rain, to tell us good bye.
The initial destination was Jack Pot, Nevada, but after consulting the map, GPS and various other gadgets we determined that Jack Pot was not far enough along the route so we opted for Wells, Nevada and stayed at the Angel Lakes RV Park, but Angle Lake is far far away up in the mountains.
Just before we got to Jack Pot we ran into some very heavy thunder and rain for a few miles. We were wondering if we were going to have some flash flooding, but nothing came of it.
We kept our watches and clocks on Mountain Time as it seemed the every few hundred miles you were entering or leaving a new time zone.
We got here in the mid afternoon, set up and had the traditional Happy Hour. We had delicious burgers on the grill, as we didn't get our burger last night.
Laboring on Labor Day
September 2, 2013, Monday Day 95
We decided to leave a day earlier than planned so we used this day, the Labor Day Holiday, to labor a little on Labor Day, fix'en to get ready. Quite a bit to put away and straighten up after two months of being parked and enjoying the great out doors.
After the packing up we did take a little time to watch a lot of tennis. Don't remember who played or who won, but I'm sure it was exciting.
That evening we had a farewell dinner at the Shore Line Bar. We were joined by Marcia and Franz and Nancy and Al. It was a great atmosphere with a good view of Lake Payette and some great music by the band. We did run into a very ditsy waitress, who managed to deliver us the wrong orders, which we didn't realize until we had seasoned them up and were beginning to eat. Sharon and I had ordered the Kobe beef hamburger and Marcia and Franz had ordered the steak sandwich, both of which were excellent. Then when she ran the credit cards she had our card on Nancy and Al's bill, we eventually got it all straightened out.
Al seemed to have a little trouble getting his to-go box put together and had to resort to using someone's glasses.
It was a great evening for our last in McCall for this year.

TPH Last Day
September 1, 2013, Sunday Day 94
Sunday and that's the day for TPH, the last Sunday in town and we had to get there early, 8 with Marcia and Franz and we got seated pretty quickly. I had the modified Fred, pancake sandwich. Pretty flowers outside at TPH.
Took advantage of the fuel discount from Riddley's, 10 cents off unlimited gallons from the Chevron Station. It beat Maverick's price of $4.07.
Holiday party at the RV Park, the Bottom Line Band with cold beer and hot dogs and bratts. No Marcia and Franz, they decided to sit this one as Franz had a hard day playing in the dirt. The party was not as big as the 4th of July Party as some of the park visitors had began returning home.

Game Day
August 31,2013, Saturday Day 93
WHAT DAY IS IT? WHAT DAY IS IT? WHAT DAY IS IT?
IT'S GAME DAY!
Yes it has finally arrived, College Football, everyone loves College Football. I hope all your teams won and won big. Texas Football starts today along with Boise State, the favorite of all the people at McCall RV Resort.
Game Day in aggie land |
Today started with a big walk along the Payette river and through the River Crossing housing development, which has quite a few more houses in it that were here last year. They have nice marked trails all around the neighborhood and down by the river. I was out for over an hour and logged a little over 3.5 miles.
Fisherman, no bites, should have used corn |
I have included another Prize Photo in today's blog. Please identify the plant below, they seem to be everywhere here in the McCall area.
Prize Picture, please identify |
Watched a lot of football including the aggie autograph session.
We managed a football break to have Happy Hour with Marcia and Franz. After which we had a good steak on the grill, one of the steaks we would have had with Andi and David if we had not of played so much golf and eaten out so often, with a nice red.
An elderly couple in their elderly car make a drive around the park, sorry this is the best picture I could get, then they disappeared.
After dishes I went to the RV park Lodge for the Boise State football party, the party had a high intensity level, but the game sucked.
My friend Dick stopped for lunch in Pagosa Springs and had a locally brewed Green Chili Beer. I asked him to bring me a case back, but he said he did not have any room. Really? Guess I'll have to try and pick some up while i'm in Albuquerque, it close to Colorado.
