Ketchikan is the port of the Day and we scheduled an Excursion to go on a small boat to see eagles, totems, and maybe a whale or two.
On the way to the excursion site our bus driver told us the Ketchikan Walmart story. This is the smallest Walmart ever. It seems that they advertised the heck out of its grand opening. Ketchikan being a small town there is not a lot going on, so this Walmart grand opening took on a significant attraction. All of the town people showed up as well as the surrounding villages. Needless to say by the end of the day the shelves were stripped and Walmart had not anticipated that. The only way to get goods up to Ketchikan was by boat, so the Grand Opening of Walmart also turned into the Grand Closing and everyone had to wait a couple of weeks before the could get the shelves restocked.
On the excursion, as advertised, we saw Eagles, Eagles nests, Totems, but no whales. In their place we were treated to a number of Seals beached in the sun.
Williamson told us to try some Alaskan Vodka, called Strait something. We went to the 49 'er bar across from the ship and they did not have any in stock and suggested that we try in Juneau.
Back aboard ship we did do a Vodka tasting, more a Vodka Selling, Gave us small thimble fulls of the stuff they were trying to sell and tried to make it sound better than it was. It wasn't.
Tonight we had an invitation from our cruise agent to go to the Crab Shack. It was very good and we had a significant amount of Crab legs as well as shrimp at the bottom of the bowl.
There was a sail away party complete with the Champagne Glass Tower being filled by the Captain and the Head Waiter. We were also celebrating Sharon's birthday on board.
